Vera had opinions about Cornwall.
She always had opinions, about hills, about rain, about the particular injustice of being asked to climb the Severn Bridge at anything above fifty—but Cornwall brought out something deeper. A philosophical objection. A protest in the chassis. Every roundabout past Bristol was met with a shudder that Peter ignored and I pretended not to notice, and by the time we hit the A38 past Bodmin, she had started making a sound like a kettle that had given up on whistling and was now simply vibrating with resentment.
"Nearly there, old girl," Peter muttered, patting the dashboard the way you'd calm a horse. "Just a few more hills and then you can rest your bones."
Vera groaned in response—or maybe that was the exhaust. It was hard to tell with her.
In the back seat, the world was quieter. Tima had fallen asleep against Eira about an hour ago, her head tipping sideways onto Eira's shoulder at an angle that looked deeply uncomfortable but apparently wasn't. Eira, for her part, hadn't moved since—sitting straight-backed and still, one arm curled protectively around Tima's waist, the other holding Hoppy in place on Tima's lap so he wouldn't slide to the floor. She took the job seriously. She always did.
Steph sat beside me in the middle seat, her knees angled sideways against the bags we hadn't been able to fit in the boot. She had her window cracked open—just enough for a thread of warm air to curl through, carrying the smell of cut grass and hot tarmac and something green and sweet that might have been gorse.
"We should've taken the A30," Steph said, not for the first time.
"We should've taken a plane," Peter replied, also not for the first time.
The road narrowed. Hedgerows rose on both sides, thick and tangled, closing the world down to a single lane of cracked tarmac and the occasional passing place. Stone walls flickered past, half-buried in ivy, and the fields beyond rolled in long, slow waves toward the coast—green darkening to emerald as the land dipped and rose.
Peter drove the way Peter always drove—one hand on the wheel, the other resting on the window ledge, his elbow jutting into the Cornish air as if claiming it. His face had changed since we crossed the Tamar. Something had softened around his eyes. Not quite a smile—Peter didn't deal in smiles when he was behind the wheel—but something adjacent. He was home.
Not home in the way Crosskeys was home—the everyday, practical, stone-and-cawl home of routine and hearth. This was older. Cornwall was the home that lived under the skin, the one you didn't talk about because talking about it would mean admitting you'd left it.
"Down here," he said, taking a turn that wasn't signposted. "Short cut. Well, short for Cornwall. Don't ask how long it actually takes."
The lane twisted and fell. The hedgerows gave way to a stretch of open hill, and for a moment the world opened wide—a sweep of green farmland rolling down toward a shimmer of blue that made my chest catch.
The sea.
You could smell it before you could really see it—salt and kelp and something electric, like the edge of a storm that had already passed and left its charge behind. Even through Vera's reluctant windows, it cut through. Steph breathed in sharply. In the back, Eira's head turned toward the light.
"There," Peter said quietly, as if the sea needed introducing. "That's it."
He said it the way he said most important things—without decoration, without emphasis. Just a fact placed gently in front of you, like a stone on a windowsill.
Tima stirred. Her eyes fluttered open, glazed with sleep, and she blinked at the bright green blur of Cornwall passing by the window. Her hand found Hoppy instinctively, squeezing his worn belly, grounding herself in the familiar before looking out at the new.
"Where's the water?" she murmured.
"Coming up, love," I said. "Just round the corner."
She pressed her face to the glass, her breath making small circles on the Surface. Eira leaned in beside her, pointing.
"Look, Tima. Boats!"
We could see Polperro now—or rather, we could see the absence of it, the way the land seemed to fold in on itself and disappear into a crease in the coastline. The road dropped steeply, curving between stone cottages with slate roofs that gleamed dull silver in the late afternoon light. A hand-painted sign pointed toward the car park at Crumplehorn.
"No cars in the village," Peter explained, pulling Vera into a space that was more suggestion than slot. "You walk in. That's the deal. Polperro doesn't let you drive to its heart. You have to earn it on foot."
He killed the engine with a decisive twist, and Vera let out a final, settling sigh—less protest now, more relief. Like she'd been holding her breath for three hundred miles and could finally let go.
The silence that followed was enormous.
Not real silence—the gulls saw to that, and the wind, and somewhere below us the steady, rhythmic conversation of water against stone. But compared to the last four hours of engine drone and road hum and the particular way Vera's left window rattled at anything above forty, it felt like the world had been turned down to a whisper.
Steph opened her door first, stepping out and stretching in that full-body way she had, arms above her head, back arching, like a cat waking from a long nap in a patch of sun.
"God," she breathed. "Smell that."
I could. Salt and stone and the sweet-sharp edge of something floral—valerian maybe, or wild thyme, growing in the cracks of the car park wall. The air was warmer here than it had been in the valleys, and softer somehow, as if Cornwall had a different recipe for atmosphere.
Peter was already at the boot, hauling bags with the efficiency of a man who'd done this before and didn't want to be sentimental about it. He handed me the big rucksack and slung the holdall over his own shoulder, adjusting the strap with a practiced tug.
"Right then," he said. "Down the hill, past the old mill, left at the pub with the blue door. Guesthouse is just beyond. Mrs Tremayne. She knows we're coming. She'll have the kettle on."
"You've been here before," I said, not really asking.
He paused, just for a beat. Something moved behind his eyes—a flicker of the past, a door opening onto a room he hadn't visited in a while.
"Once or twice," he said. "Long time ago. Different life."
Then he turned and started walking, and the conversation was over.
We carried the girls down the hill.
I had Tima on my hip, her arms looped lazily around my neck, Hoppy dangling from one hand. She was awake now but still soft with sleep, her eyes half-lidded, watching the world scroll past in fragments. Eira walked beside Steph, holding her hand, pointing at every new thing with the other—a cat on a wall, a fishing net hung to dry, a garden gate painted the exact colour of the sea.
The lane was steep and cobbled, the stones worn smooth by centuries of feet and weather. The sound of the harbour appeared before the harbour itself—the clink of mast wires, the slap of water on stone, the low creak of boats resting against their moorings. Then the lane turned one final time, and the whole of Polperro opened like a cupped hand.
The harbour was small and ancient—two stone quays reaching out like arms, holding a pool of water so clear and turquoise it looked like someone had poured the Caribbean into a Cornish fishing port and hoped nobody would notice. Boats rested at their ropes, tilted slightly, their hulls painted in bright primary colours that had been softened by salt and sun. The village climbed steeply on both sides, cottage upon cottage, each one leaning into the next like tired friends propping each other up after a long walk.
Tima's eyes went wide.
"It's a secret place," she whispered.
And she was right. Standing there at the harbour's edge, the world felt hidden—tucked into a fold in the coast that the rest of England had simply forgotten to find. The sky was enormous above us, pale blue deepening to gold at the western rim, and the water held everything in its still surface like a mirror that had decided to remember.
"It's not secret," Eira corrected, though not unkindly. "It's just good at hiding."

"Used to fish here," he said to no one in particular. "Well, not here. Mevagissey. But the water's the same. Smells the same. Sounds the same when it hits the wall."
Steph touched his arm, light and brief, the way she did when she knew he needed to be let alone with a memory but didn't want him to carry it too far.
"Come on," she said. "Mrs Tremayne and her kettle."

"Well now. You've brought a proper family with you this time. Come in, come in. I've got rooms ready and the kettle's been on since three."
The guesthouse was everything the outside promised—low ceilings, thick walls, the smell of lavender and something baking. Mrs Tremayne showed us the two rooms upstairs—one for me and Tima, one for Steph and Eira—and a pull-out in the sitting room for Peter, which he accepted without complaint.

"Different car. Same soul."

"That's Hoppy," Tima said. "He's my hippo. He's very brave but he doesn't like thunder."
"Well," Mrs Tremayne said, "we don't get much thunder in Polperro. Just seagulls. They're ruder but quieter."
Tima laughed—that bright, hiccup laugh that meant she'd decided someone was safe—and the evening began properly.
We sat in Mrs Tremayne's kitchen and drank tea from mismatched mugs while the girls ate toast with strawberry jam and the adults tried to remember what relaxation felt like. The kitchen window looked directly out over the harbour, and the light coming in was golden now, the sun settling low over the western headland, turning the water to hammered copper.
Steph had both hands wrapped around her mug, her shoulders lower than they'd been in weeks. "She made this place glow," he said. "The way she saw things—it rubbed off. You'd walk through the village with her and suddenly notice things you'd walked past a hundred times. A cracked tile. A rope coiled just so. The way the shadow hit a doorframe at four o'clock."
He took a sip of his tea. The steam curled up and vanished.
"She'd have loved this," he said. "The girls. The noise. The mess of it."
"She'd have drawn them," I said.
"Aye. Probably on a napkin. With a borrowed pen that only half worked."
We stood there a while longer, the stars thickening above us, the harbour settling into its nighttime rhythm. A cat appeared on the quay wall, picked its way along the stones with the confidence of ownership, and disappeared into the shadow of a fishing net.
"Thank you," I said. "For bringing us here."
Peter looked at me—really looked, the way he did when he wanted you to understand that what came next wasn't small talk.
"You belong here too," he said. "All of you. Cornwall doesn't keep score. It just lets you in."
He finished his tea, rinsed the mug under the outdoor tap, and went inside. The door creaked shut. I stayed a moment longer, looking at the doubled stars, the sleeping boats, the ancient harbour holding everything gently in its stone arms.
Then I went in too, and slept deeper than I had in months.

"Like sleeping?"
"Like sleeping. In and out. All night."

Downstairs, the guesthouse kitchen was already warm with the smell of bacon and fresh toast. After breakfast, we walked down to the harbour. "He hasn't had his breakfast," I said. "He's waiting for someone to drop a chip."
"I don't have chips."
"Then he'll have to wait."
She considered the gull for a moment, then addressed it directly. "Be patient," she said, in her best grown-up voice. "Breakfast comes to those who sit."
Peter, walking ahead, let out a bark of laughter. "Where'd she learn that?"
"Steph," I said.
"Course she did."
The harbour path curved past the old fish market—shut now, but the smell lingered like a ghost—and out toward the mouth of the cove where the rocks began to show themselves. They were massive and dark, sculpted by centuries of water into shapes that looked made rather than worn—smooth as bone, ridged like the backs of sleeping creatures.
Eira reached the rocks first and was already climbing before Steph could formulate an objection. Tima followed, slower, placing each foot with the careful deliberation of someone who understood that the ground couldn't always be trusted.
"Hold Hoppy safe," she told me, handing him over with great ceremony. "He doesn't like heights."
I tucked him into my jacket and patted his head. "Agent Hoppy is secure."
She nodded, satisfied, and began to climb.
They didn't go far—just high enough to sit on a flat shelf of rock that looked out across the harbour mouth toward the open sea. From there, the view was extraordinary. The water stretched out in a gradient from turquoise to deep blue, the sun catching waves that rolled in lazy, unhurried sets toward the headland. The sky was enormous—bigger than it ever seemed in the valleys, as if Cornwall had negotiated extra allocation.
Tima sat very still. Her legs dangled over the edge. Her hands were flat on the warm stone.
"It goes forever," she whispered.
"Not forever. But a very long way."
"Where?"
"France, eventually. Then Spain. Then Africa. Then—well, then more water."

Eira, beside her, had discovered a rock pool. Within seconds, both girls were on their bellies, faces inches from the water, peering into a miniature world of anemones and tiny darting things.
"A crab!" Eira shouted. "It's tiny! It's green!"
Tima leaned closer, her hair almost touching the surface. She watched the crab with the intensity of a scientist and the tenderness of someone who understood that small things deserved attention.
"He's got a little house," she said softly. "On his back. So he can go anywhere and still be home."
I didn't say anything to that. I just sat on the warm rock and held Hoppy and watched two small girls discover the ocean, and felt the morning open around us like a room with no walls.

A seagull landed on the wall beside our table with the authority of a building inspector.
Tima looked at it. It looked at Tima.
"Hello again," she said. "You found us."
The gull tilted its head.
"He followed us from the harbour," Eira said knowingly. "He wants our chips."
"He can't have them," Tima said, shielding her plate with one arm. "He needs to wait. We're eating."
The gull remained, undeterred. It was an old one, its feathers slightly ragged, with the weary patience of a creature that had outlasted better defences than a two-year-old's arm.
Peter threw it a single chip. It caught it midair and swallowed without chewing.
"Don't encourage it," Steph said.
"I'm not encouraging it. I'm paying tribute. There's a difference."
The afternoon unravelled from there in the way Polperro afternoons must have unravelled for centuries—slowly, without agenda, shaped by tide and light and the quiet pull of a place that doesn't ask you to do anything except be in it.
We walked the harbour wall. The girls trailed their hands along the rough stone, counting boats. Peter told them about smugglers—how Zephaniah Job, the smugglers' banker, had run his entire operation from this village, how boats would come in at night with spirits and tobacco hidden beneath the catch.
"Right here," he said, stamping his foot on the quay. "Right under where you're standing. Two hundred years ago, this was the most lawless harbour in Cornwall."
Tima looked down at the stones with new respect. "Were they bad men?"
Peter considered this with the seriousness it deserved. "They were hungry men. And the taxes were unfair. Sometimes the law is wrong, and people have to decide for themselves what's right."
"Like Robin Hood," Eira offered.
"Like Robin Hood, aye. Except wetter, and with more fish."
We followed the coast path east toward Talland Bay—not far, just enough to stretch our legs and let the girls burn off the energy that seemed to regenerate in them like a natural resource. The path was narrow and edged with wildflowers, the ground soft and springy with sea campion and thrift. The view opened at every turn—glint of water, dark cliff, a cove below like a secret only the path knew.
Tima walked ahead of me, her yellow sunhat bobbing with each step, her little legs pumping with that determined gait of toddlers who have somewhere to be even when they don't. She stopped every few meters to examine something—a beetle on a leaf, a stone with a stripe, a flower she wanted to name.
"This one's a star flower," she said, holding up a small white bloom.
"Sea campion," I said.
"Star flower," she repeated firmly.
"Star flower it is."
Eira ran ahead and came running back, breathless. "There's a bench! With a view! Come look!"
The bench sat on a small promontory overlooking the water, the kind of spot that existed solely for the purpose of making you stop and look. Below, the sea moved in long, slow rollers—green and blue and white where it met the rocks. The headland opposite was dark with gorse and heather, and a single white sail tracked slowly across the horizon like a brushstroke being added to a painting that was already finished.
We sat.
All five of us on one bench, the girls squeezed between the adults, legs swinging, ice cream cones from the village shop already melting in the sun. Steph had vanilla. Peter had nothing. He just sat there, elbows on his knees, looking at the sea with that face again—the face of a man returning to a frequency he'd forgotten he could hear.
Nobody talked much. The wind did most of the speaking, and it was eloquent.
I looked at Tima—strawberry ice cream on her chin, Hoppy in her lap, the Cornish coast spread out behind her like a painting—and I felt that thing. That specific, unnamed thing that comes when you realise a moment is already becoming a memory even as you're living it. She caught me looking and grinned, showing small milk teeth and pink tongue and a face entirely committed to happiness.
"Tad," she said. "This is the best day."
"It is," I said.

She nodded solemnly and returned to her ice cream, and the afternoon hung there—warm and still and certain—like a bell that had been struck and was still singing.

A couple with a dog at the far end. A woman reading under a parasol. The sea rolled in long, muscular waves that broke white against the rocks at the edges and then softened as they reached the beach, sighing up the sand in thin, glassy sheets before retreating.
Tima stood at the water's edge with her toes touching the foam and her face set in an expression of intense negotiation—the desire to go in warring visibly with the biological reality that the English Channel in mid-June is not warm. It is not even lukewarm. It is a temperature that the body interprets as a personal insult.
"It's COLD," she announced, foot withdrawn, voice pitched with genuine offence.
"It's the sea," Steph said mildly. "It's not a bath."
"It should be."
But she went in anyway. They both did—Tima in her swimming costume printed with small yellow ducks, Eira in her red one with the frill at the back that she hated and Steph refused to replace because "it's perfectly good, Eira, the frill doesn't affect your ability to swim." They held hands and walked in together, shrieking with each new inch of cold, clutching each other, their laughter so sharp and bright it sent the gulls up from the rocks.

"She's got no fear," he said, meaning Tima. "Not fearless—that's different, that's stupid. She's just... unafraid. She looks at a thing, decides about it, and then she does it."
"She gets that from—" I started.
"Aye," he said, before I finished. "She does."
Out in the shallows, Tima was trying to catch the foam. Each wave brought a rush of white water that she scooped at with both hands, but of course it dissolved the moment she touched it—bubbles popping, water sliding through her fingers, nothing left but wet palms and a look of baffled determination.
"It keeps disappearing!" she called to us.
"That's foam for you," Peter called back. "It's made of almost nothing. Just air pretending to be something."
She considered this wisdom, then returned to catching it with redoubled effort.

"Probably not. Probably a dodgy thermocouple. But I'll check for ghosts too, just to be thorough." He dipped a chip in curry sauce. "You want to come along?"
"To fix a boiler?"
"To keep me company. It's a Saturday job, won't take half a day. You can wander about. Abercarn's got a few shops. Fresh air. Mild excitement."
I hesitated. "Tima—"
"Steph's already offered. She'll have Tima for the weekend. Eira's been asking for her since we got back from Cornwall. They'll be thick as thieves within five minutes."
I looked at Tima, who was sitting on the kitchen floor, arranging chips around Hoppy in a decorative pattern.
"What do you think, love? Weekend with Eira and Steph?"
She looked up. Her face went through a rapid series of calculations—the pleasure of Eira, weighed against the unfamiliarity of a night without me, weighed again against the known quantity of Steph's house and its particular charms (biscuits, the garden, the big colouring book that lived under the coffee table).

Peter parked Vera outside Mrs Davies' house—a terraced cottage halfway up the hill, with a front garden the size of a doormat and a cat sitting in the window that did indeed look like it hated everyone.
"Right," Peter said, pulling his toolbox from the boot. "This'll take me a couple of hours. Her boiler's in the kitchen, which means the cat's going to be in the way, which means I need complete concentration. You—" he pointed at me—"go and be useful somewhere else. Walk about. Buy a paper. Don't get into trouble."
"I never get into trouble."
"You once set fire to toast so badly the smoke alarm didn't stop for thirty minutes."
"That was a one-off."
"It was a Tuesday."
He disappeared into Mrs Davies' house, the door closing behind him with the sound of a cat hissing and Peter's voice saying, "Morning Meredith, lovely to see you too."
I stood on the pavement for a moment, hands in pockets, looking up and down the street. The morning was fine—dry, warm, the sky a pale, high blue that suggested the day hadn't yet made up its mind about ambition. "Tad! We found a worm! A REAL one!"
"Was it big?"
"ENORMOUS," Eira confirmed from behind Steph. "And it was called Gerald."
"Gerald the worm. Of course."
Tima pulled back and looked up at me with that searching look. "I was brave," she said. "I slept in Eira's room and I only woke up once."
"That's very brave."
"Steph gave me warm milk. And Eira sang a song."
"What song?"
"The one about the fish."
I looked at Steph, who shrugged. "It's half in Welsh, half made up. But it works."
Steph leaned against the doorframe and watched Tima with the particular expression she wore when she was pleased about something but didn't want to make a fuss.
"She was good as gold," she said to me quietly, while the girls were examining something in the flower bed. "The wobble at bedtime lasted about ninety seconds. Eira held her hand and told her a story about a rabbit who lived on the moon, and by the time the rabbit had built a house out of cheese Tima was asleep."

"Stop thanking me. She's family. Family doesn't need thanking."
She said it simply, the way she said everything—straight and warm and without fuss—but I felt the weight of it. The truth of it. This woman who had no obligation to us except the one she'd chosen, and who chose it again every day as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
Tima grabbed my hand and started pulling me toward the car. "Let's go home now. I want to tell Hoppy about Gerald."
She was chatting all the way back to the cottage—about the worm, about the mud, about how Eira had taught her a secret handshake that involved elbows and was "very important, Tad, you can't do it wrong or it doesn't work." Monday I took her to daycare and came home to the quiet cottage and thought about the bear.

Steph and Eira arrived at the cottage at half nine, Eira already in her wellies and carrying a bag of something she wouldn't explain.
"It's a secret project," she said, when Tima asked.
"I like secrets," Tima said.
"Good. You'll find out at the playground."
Peter pulled up ten minutes later in Vera, who took the short drive from his place with only a minor complaint—a rattle from somewhere beneath the passenger seat that he dismissed as "personality."
"Right then," he said, standing in the kitchen doorway, bag of scones from the bakery in one hand, flask of tea in the other. "Who's ready?"
We drove in convoy—Peter and me in Vera, Steph and the girls in her small blue Fiesta that smelled permanently of wet wipes and the particular brand of biscuits Eira preferred. The drive was barely five minutes—up through Crosskeys, past the rugby club, and then the road climbing gently into the trees as the valley narrowed and the forest closed in.
The Forest Drive entrance was familiar now—the sign, the small toll booth, the particular bend where the road dipped and the canopy formed a tunnel of green and gold. Tima knew the way. She could tell you where the big oak was, where the stream crossed under the road, where the buzzard liked to circle on a good day.

The visitor centre car park was half full—a Tuesday mix of retired couples, a mum with a double buggy, a man in hiking gear studying a map with the intensity of someone planning a military campaign. Two other families with kids. The ordinary population of a forest on a weekday morning.
We parked and unloaded with the practiced efficiency of people who'd done this enough times to have a system. Peter carried the bag with the scones and the flask. Steph had the girls' water bottles and the emergency kit she never went anywhere without—plasters, wet wipes, sun cream, and a specific brand of oat bar that could defuse most tantrums within thirty seconds. "Morning, Margaret," she said, as she always did, patting the wall beneath the carved bee as she passed.
Peter was already at the outdoor tables, distributing scones with the precision of a man who considered cream placement a matter of principle. Steph went inside for coffees. I sat on the bench and watched the girls head for the playground, where three other children were already occupying the climbing frame with the territorial confidence of regulars.
Eira knew one of them—a boy from her school called Rhys, who had a talent for hanging upside down from things and a missing front tooth that he wore like a badge of honour. Within minutes, some elaborate game was underway involving the climbing frame, a set of rules that seemed to evolve in real time, and a great deal of shouting.
Tima joined at the edges, the way she always did with groups—orbiting first, watching, assessing the social physics before committing. "Tell me the Brân story again," Eira said, appearing suddenly at Peter's elbow, flushed and slightly out of breath. Rhys hovered behind her, interested but pretending not to be.
Peter leaned back. He loved this. You could see it—the way his face changed when a story was requested, the way he settled into it like a chair he'd sat in a thousand times.
"You've heard it before," he said.
"Tell it properly this time. With the bees."
Peter glanced at the wooden sculptures on the visitor centre wall. The carved bees. The ravens. The knotwork that twisted and looped like something alive.
"Right, then." He took a sip of tea. "Brân the Blessed. Giant king of Britain. "How badly?" Eira asked.
"Badly enough that he walked across the sea to sort it out. Which tells you something about him."
Rhys had given up pretending not to listen and was now sitting cross-legged on the ground, chin in his hands.
Tima had drifted over too, drawn by Peter's story voice—that particular low, steady register he used when he was telling something that mattered. She sat beside Eira with Hoppy on her lap and Steve-the-dinosaur's owner beside her, both of them watching Peter with the wide-eyed attention that children give to someone they trust to tell the truth.
"He won the battle," Peter continued. "But he was struck in the foot by a poisoned spear. Knew he was dying. So he told his men—the seven that were left—to cut off his head."
"Ew," said Rhys, delighted.
"Not ew. Clever. Because Brân's head kept talking. Kept giving wisdom. For seventy years it spoke, and the seven men carried it with them, and eventually they buried it in London, under the White Tower, facing the sea. To protect the island."
"His head talked for seventy years?" Eira's face was a mix of horror and fascination.
"Aye. Some people have a lot to say." He paused to let that land. "But here's the part that matters—here." Peter pointed again toward Twmbarlwm. "They brought his body back to Wales. Back home. And they buried him up there, under the mound at the top of the mountain. With his armour and his treasure. And they set a guard."
"Soldiers?" Tima asked.
"Bees."
The word landed differently when Peter said it—heavier, older, carrying the weight of the myth behind it. The children went quiet.
"Bees guard the treasure," Peter said. "Brân's bees. Anyone who disturbs the mound, anyone who tries to steal the gold—the bees come. They've been there for centuries. Thousands of years, maybe. In the old stories, bees were travellers between this world and the Otherworld—Annwfn. They carried messages from the gods. They held wisdom. And Brân's bees are the fiercest of all, because they're protecting something that matters."
He pointed at the carved bees on the wall.
"That's what those are. Brân's bees. Carved right into the building, because this forest sits in the shadow of his mountain. Every bee you see up here—the real ones, buzzing about in the meadow—they're his. That's the story, anyway."
Eira looked up at the wooden bees on the wall with new eyes. She'd heard the story before—they all had—but each time Peter told it, new details appeared, as if the myth itself was alive and still growing.
"Are they actually real?" Rhys asked. "The bees that guard the treasure?"
"In the 1860s," Peter said, leaning forward, "a huge swarm of bees and wasps were seen fighting above Twmbarlwm. Thousands of them. People came from the valleys to watch. The bees won."
"The bees always win," Tima said quietly, and nobody argued with her.
Peter sat back, satisfied. The story had landed where it needed to.
The morning moved on. Eira and Rhys returned to the climbing frame, now incorporating elements of the Brân legend into their game—something involving a treasure and a guardian and a lot of dramatic falling. The girl with Steve the dinosaur was recruited as "the Irish king," a role she accepted with solemn authority. Tima stayed near the slide, watching from the periphery and occasionally contributing rulings on the game's evolving law—"The bees say no," she'd announce, and whatever disputed action was under review would be reversed without question.
Steph came back with a second round of coffees and sat beside me.
"He's told the Brân story again, hasn't he?" she said, watching the children.
"Eira asked for it."
"Eira asks for it every time. She'll be an archaeologist or a fantasist. Possibly both."
I laughed. And then, without thinking about it much—the way you do things when the moment is right and your body knows before your brain catches up—I reached into my jacket pocket.
The bear was there. He'd been there all morning, a small, negligible weight against my ribs. I'd almost forgotten him. Almost.
"Oh," I said, as Tima came back to the bench for her water bottle. "I found something the other day. In a shop. Thought you might like it."
I held him out.
He looked slightly pressed from days in my pocket—fur a bit flat on one side, bow-tie slightly askew. But his eyes were the same. Dark and patient and ready.
Tima took him. Just took him, the way children take things—without ceremony, without the adult need to frame and contextualise and assign meaning. She held him in both hands and looked at his face. Turned him over. Felt his fur.
"He's soft," she said.
"He is."
"He's got a bow."
"That's his thing."
She held him up to Hoppy. The two plushies faced each other—one worn and beloved, one new to the family.
"Hoppy," she said, "this is your new friend."
She pressed them together, cheek to cheek. Then pulled the bear back and looked at him again.
"Boe," she said.
"Boe?"
She pointed at the bow-tie. "Boe. Because of his bow."
And that was it. No fanfare. No philosophical reckoning. Just a name, arriving the way names do—immediately, completely, as if it had been there all along and she'd simply been the first to say it out loud.
She tucked Boe under her arm beside Hoppy and went back to the slide, where Steve-the-dinosaur's owner was waiting.
"This is Boe," I heard her say. "He's new."
"He's got a bow," the girl observed.
"That's why he's Boe."
"Okay."
And play resumed.
Steph looked at me over her coffee.
"Where'd you find that?" she asked.
"Secondhand shop in Abercarn. Saturday, when Peter was doing Mrs Davies' boiler."
She nodded slowly. "It suits her."
"I thought so."
Peter, who had watched the whole thing from behind his mug with the expression of a man who sees everything and comments on nothing, finally spoke.
"Boe," he said, testing the word. "Good name. Brân had his bees. She's got her Boe."
A real bumblebee—a fat, determined one—landed on the picnic table near Peter's scone, investigated a crumb, and lifted off again into the warm air.
Tima saw it from the playground. "Bumblebee Boe!" she called across the clearing, holding up the bear, showing him the bee. Whether she was naming the bee or renaming the bear or simply connecting two things that her mind had placed together, it wasn't clear. It didn't need to be.
Eira ran past, breathless.
"Who's Boe?"
"My bear. He's got a bow and the bees like him."
"Cool. Come play. We need someone to guard the treasure."
Tima looked at Boe. Looked at Hoppy. Made a decision.
"Boe can guard the treasure," she said. "He's new. He needs a job."
She placed Boe carefully on the bench beside the rucksack, propped against the water bottle so he could see the playground, and ran off to join the game. Hoppy stayed under her arm. Boe watched from his post.
I sat on the bench in the Cwmcarn car park and let the morning be a morning. Kids shouting. Peter reading his paper. Steph talking to Rhys's mum about parking at Tesco. The forest breathing its slow green breath. The carved bees on the wall. The real bees in the meadow. The flat top of Twmbarlwm above the treeline, holding its dead king and his treasure and his guard.
And a small bear with patient eyes and a cream bow-tie, sitting on a bench in the sun, watching the world from his new post.

We stayed until the afternoon leaned toward shadow. The kids ran themselves hollow. Eira's secret project turned out to be a collection of leaves she was pressing for a "nature book," which she assembled on the picnic table with sellotape and commentary. Tima added three drawings—Boe, Margaret the bee, and a circle with legs that she said was "Brân but small."
Peter walked the short loop trail through the lower forest and came back saying the rowan was in bloom and the woodpecker was back. Steph had found a bench in the sun and read three chapters of her book, which she said was the most consecutive pages she'd managed since Eira learned to talk.
We drove home in the golden hour—Vera leading, Steph's Fiesta following, the valley opening below us as the forest fell away. Tima sat in the back with Hoppy in her left arm and Boe in her right, chattering to both of them about the treasure game and the bees and a boy called Rhys who could hang upside down "for actually ages, Tad, it was amazing."
At the cottage, Steph and Eira came in for tea before heading home. The five of us sat around the kitchen table the way we always did—bread and cheese and chutney and mugs of tea too hot to hold but held anyway. The girls sat beside each other, their respective plushie families arranged on the table between the butter dish and the salt cellar.
"Boe," Eira said, examining him across the table. "He's quite posh. The bow-tie."
"He's not posh," Tima said. "He's just dressed nice. There's a difference."
"Is there?"
"Peter wears a nice shirt sometimes and he's not posh."
"Fair point," Peter said.
Steph and Eira left at six—Eira hugging Tima goodbye with the usual intensity, whispering something in her ear that made Tima laugh.
"What did she say?" I asked, after they'd gone.
"She said Boe looks like a professor."
"Does he?"
Tima held Boe up and studied him. "A little bit. But a nice professor. The kind that gives you sweets."
Peter left shortly after—Vera coughing once in the lane before finding her rhythm. At the door, he paused and looked back at Tima, sitting on the kitchen floor with Hoppy and Boe arranged in front of her, telling them something about trees.
"Good Tuesday," he said.
"Good Tuesday."
Then he left.

The evening was long and ordinary and ours.
I made beans on toast. Tima ate at the kitchen table with Boe propped against the ketchup bottle and Hoppy in his usual spot by the salt. She adjusted Boe twice during the meal—once because "he couldn't see the beans" and once because "he needs to be closer, Tad, he's never had beans before."
"Does he like them?"
She held Boe up to the plate, considered, then shook her head. "He says they're interesting but he prefers honey. Because he's a bear."
"Fair enough."
After dinner she sat on the floor by the hearth and drew. The sea—a blue stripe across the bottom of the page. The playground at Cwmcarn—a brown scribble with figures on a swing. A circle with legs that was Gerald the worm, "but walking, Tad, because sometimes worms want to walk instead of wriggle." And in the middle of the page, three shapes—one big with stick legs, one small and grey, one small and brown with a triangular thing at the neck.
"This is us," she said, holding it up. "Tad, Hoppy, and Boe."
"It's beautiful."
"I know," she said, with the serene confidence of someone who had never doubted it.
Bath time. Both plushies escorted to the bathroom door but not beyond. "They can watch. But they don't like getting wet." She arranged them on the towel rail—Hoppy on the left, Boe on the right, both facing her.
"Boe," she said from the bath, "this is the bathroom. That's the tap. That's the soap. The duck is not real, but he's nice."
She sang while I washed her hair—a version of Eira's fish song, now expanded to include a bear and a bumblebee.
"The fish went swimming, the bear went too, the bumblebee was buzzing, and the hippo knew..."
"Knew what?"
"I haven't decided yet. The song's still growing."
Bedtime. The routine. Quilt, pillow, lamp.
But tonight, something new in the arrangement. Tima stood by the bed and looked at it with the seriousness of someone making a decision that would define the architecture of all future nights.
Hoppy on the left. His spot. Non-negotiable.
Boe on the right. She straightened his bow-tie with her thumb and forefinger, tilted his head so his eyes looked up at the ceiling, and nudged him half an inch toward Hoppy until they were touching. Shoulder to shoulder.
She stepped back. Hands on hips. Considered.
"Right," she said, and climbed in between them.
I sat in the woven-string chair and read the story she always asked for when the day had been big—the one about the girl who found a shell that sang, and when she held it to her ear she could hear the voices of everyone who had ever loved her.
Her eyes followed mine, then drifted, then softened. Her left hand found Hoppy. Her right hand found Boe.
"Tad?"
"Mm?"
"Boe says thank you. For finding him."
"I think he found us," I said.
She smiled—already mostly asleep, the smile more breath than expression.
"That's what he said too."
Her breathing deepened. Her fingers loosened around both guardians but didn't release them—that half-grip of sleep, holding on not from fear but because holding was itself the comfort.
Outside, the valley was dark and quiet. An owl called once from the treeline—a single low note that hung and dissolved. Through the small window, one star appeared over the hills, then another, the sky deepening the way it did every night, the way it would do every night after this one.
I pulled the small journal from my pocket and wrote in the margin of the last page:
She named him Boe.
From the bow-tie.
Tuesday at Cwmcarn, on the bench by the playground,
between scones and the Brân story
and a boy called Rhys hanging upside down.
She held him up to Hoppy and said,
"This is your new friend."
And that was all it took.
I closed the journal.
The cottage breathed.
And somewhere in the dark, tucked between a well-worn hippo and a sleeping girl, a small bear with patient eyes and a cream bow-tie settled into the space that had been waiting for him, and called it home.
